New Chairman for UK Tram

UK Tram, the organisation representing the country’s light rail sector, has announced the high-profile appointment of George Lowder MBE as its new Chairman

As Chief Executive of Transport for Edinburgh (TfE), George was instrumental in the development and delivery of a successful integrated transport network, which includes the city’s acclaimed tramway, and brings a wealth of experience to the role.

He’s now stepped into the position at UK Tram previously held by Geoff Inskip and intends to build on the significant achievements of his predecessor.

James Hammett, Managing Director of UK Tram, explained: “In recent years, our organisation has become the leading voice of the sector.

“It’s evolving amid resurgent interest in modern tramways, with UK Tram leading the sector’s response to a recent Government ‘Call for Evidence’ on the benefits of light rail.

“George’s experience will prove invaluable in our mission to promote light rail as the most effective way of reducing urban congestion, improving air quality and driving inward investment.”

Following his appointment, Mr Lowder commented: “These are exciting times as, across the country, a number of expansion projects are underway, and several other areas are considering building light rail systems.

“I’m looking forward to helping UK Tram drive the case for further investment in a mode of transport that’s already been embraced by the travelling public.

“At the same time, we’re looking forward to strengthening links with key stakeholders to deliver significant benefits for members, including the opportunity to share best practice and access to a broad range of resources and services.”

The new UK Tram Chairman took up the post of Chief Executive of Transport for Edinburgh (TfE) in January 2016 after a first career in The Army. TfE is the parent company of Lothian Buses and Edinburgh Trams.  George has led the development of a new strategy, the introduction of a cycle hire scheme and other mobility projects for the Edinburgh City Region. Not least, helping to get the decision to take tram to Newhaven across the line.

George is Vice President of The Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, Chairs the Boards of two Scottish charities and is a Trustee of a third.
