The country’s light rail sector is continuing to ‘pull out all the stops’ to help keep customers and employees safe during the latest phase of the coronavirus crisis.

Industry experts from UKTram have played an important role in shaping new government safety guidelines aimed at assisting operators in implementing pragmatic measures to help protect both staff and passengers who have no alternative but to use light rail networks during the pandemic.

James Hammett, UKTram Managing Director, explained: “Grant Shapps, the Transport Secretary, has recognised there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution, and we accept it is difficult for government to provide definitive advice for every mode of public transport.

“What stands out however is the way in which tram and light rail operators have stepped up to the challenge during this difficult time. They have pulled out all the stops in an attempt to make travel as safe as possible for key staff who absolutely rely on tram networks to get to and from work.”

The wide-ranging guidance, which also includes advice for the travelling public, follows consultations with a wide range of transport organisations, including UKTram.

Mr Hammett added: “The light rail sector has been quick to take action to carry out comprehensive risk assessments, to implement enhanced cleaning programmes and to put extensive social distancing measures in place.

“Now, as we enter a new phase of dealing with the pandemic, UKTram is standing ready to offer our members further support in implementing the latest recommendations in a way that meets the individual challenges they face. This includes developing clear safety messaging for both customers and employees.

“We’ll also continue to build on the work already being done to share best practice as we all adapt to a very different operational environment, seeking further clarification – and support – from government where necessary,” he added.
