A pioneering project aimed at further improving tram safety by utilising the latest biometric monitoring technology has taken a significant step forward with the launch of a new website.

The Driver Innovation Safety Challenge (DISC) is being led by Edinburgh Trams with the support of UKTram and a partnership of public and private sector organisations.

Ahead of trials that will see safety critical workers wearing equipment designed to monitor fatigue levels and alert operators of other health issues that may impact on safety, the website sets out the full scope of the project.

Colin Kerr, Safety & Projects Manager at Edinburgh Trams and UKTram board member, explained: “The project is now well advanced, and the new online resource offers colleagues from across the light rail sector the opportunity to follow its progress.”

The website’s launch follows the appointment of human factors consultancy IHF as the project partner responsible for developing the next generation of health, wellbeing and human performance monitoring systems.

Other project partners include City of Edinburgh Council, Transport for Edinburgh and Scotland Can Do Fund.

Mr Kerr added: “Together they aim to develop a world leading system that can help save lives, reduce risk and deliver efficiencies across multiple industry sectors, around the globe.”
