This week sees a significant development for the light rail sector with the introduction of new rules for mandatory face coverings on all public transport.
UKTram has worked closely with the Department for Transport, members and organisations representing other modes of transport, on the best way to implement the new rules – resulting in the publication of updated guidance at the weekend.
The latest restrictions have been widely reported in the media, with some light rail networks featuring on regional television. These included NET which published its own response to the guidelines here

West Midlands Metro
In a bid to offer extra flexibility for customers through the next phase of the coronavirus pandemic, the operator has launched a range of great-value ticket options. Available exclusively on the My Metro App, these new products are aimed at those who need to use the tram but find they’re travelling less frequently than before the Covid-19 outbreak and you can see the full story here

Metrolink
In Manchester, Metrolink is increasing services to a 10-minute frequency across the network from Monday, June 22 June and you can read more here . It’s also introduced discounts to support flexible working. The new Clipper tram ticket from Monday 15 June will help people travelling less often. Metrolink passengers can also use the contactless early bird bonus to save money when travelling before 7am on weekdays
Sheffield Supertram
This week has seen the start of additional services running on Stagecoach Supertram, with around 80% of the usual service being operated Monday to Saturday. A 15 minute frequency is now in operation on the Blue and Yellow routes whilst it will be two services an hour on the Tram-Train service. Click here for more.
Tyne & Wear Metro
Nexus is offering a £1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the thieves who attempted to steal cables from the Metro system. The incident caused service disruption between St James and North Shields for most of Friday June 12. The full story can be found here
